Annually, CanHepC extends fellowships to provide transdisciplinary training and stipend support to both Canadian and foreign individuals involved in hepatitis C research, who are university graduates at various stages of their academic and professional careers. This program and the stipends it provides are meant to further trainees' knowledge and understanding of hepatitis C.

Two types of fellowships are offered:

Exchange Program: CanHepC in collaboration with the German TRR179 Network are offering internship exchange opportunities. Read more about the CanHepC - TRR179 Internship Exchange program below.

CRITERIA TRAINEES FELLOWSHIPS (MSc, PhD, Postdoc, MD)

Requirements:

  • PhD students and post-doctoral trainees must be able to commit two years (minimum) to the program. They should not be beyond their third year of training on September 1st, 2023
  • MSc and PhD trainees must be a full-time student for their duration in the program.
  • Must be registered or must have the intent to register in a recognized graduate program the same year where the application has been accepted by the research training program.
  • Must be supervised or co-supervised by a CanHepC mentor:
    • Each mentor can only have 2 trainees in the program at any time. Communicate with your proposed mentor to make sure they have the space for you. Under exceptional conditions, a third trainee could be accepted under co-supervision.
    • A mentor is a PI who is a co-applicant on the CanHepC CIHR funded grant and holds an academic appointment that allows him/her to accept and supervise trainees. Please consult the Directory on the Member’s page to know who the CanHepC mentors are.
  • Trainees admitted into the program are expected to take part in a variety of activities. See the Training Curriculum page.

CRITERIA SUMMER STUDENT FELLOWSHIPS

Requirements

  • Interested summer students must, at a minimum, be pursuing a Canadian baccalaureate degree with some relevance to Hepatitis C (e.g. Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Health Sciences, etc.).
  • Every summer student must be supervised by a CanHepC mentor. Please contact the mentor(s) you are interested in working with directly. Please consult the Directory on the Member’s page to know who the CanHepC mentors are.

Additional information for summer students

  • During their time with the CanHepC (usually 2-4 months), summer students work closely with one of the mentors of the program. They will arrange to work on a small project.
  • Summer students receive $6,000. The money is sent directly to the student's mentor who then redistributes it to the student.
  • Upon completion of the program, the students must submit a short report discussing their project, its implications regarding hepatitis C research, and how the experience affected them personally. This report should be sent to Norma Choucha @ norma.choucha@canhepc.ca.

CanHepC - TRR179 INTERNSHIP EXCHANGE PROGRAM

CanHepC and the German TRR179 Network are offering the opportunity for one CanHepC trainee and one student from the German TRR179 Hepatitis Network to do a 2-6 months internship with one the of PIs affiliated to the other network. The TRR179 network is a collaborative research center funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) consisting of 18 interdisciplinary research projects on three different partner sites in Germany (Heidelberg, Freiburg and Munich). The overall aim of the TRR179 is to identify the decisive virological and immunological mechanisms determining the outcome of hepatitis virus infection. For further information see HERE.

Requirements

Who can apply?

  • Doctoral students (Ph.D. and MD) funded by either CanHepC or TRR179
  • Postdoctoral students funded by either CanHepC or TRR17
  • MSc students of the affiliated PIs

What can be funded?

  • Research topic of the applicant must be linked to the respective research focus of PhD/postdoctoral project
  • Ideally, new methods, experimental setups, scientific experience will be gained by the exchange and transferred to the respective networks.

Duration of funding: 2 to 6 months within 2023

Value: CanHepC applicants will receive max. $7500 CAD and TRR179 students max. €5.000 EUR. These amounts will cover the following expenses (please note receipts need to be kept for reimbursement):

  • Travel allowance
  • Accommodation
  • Other costs like e.g. visa costs, health insurance etc.
